Survivor’s Law II (Epi 1-10) Thoughts

I started watching Survivor’s Law II about a couple of weeks ago. One thing to clarify is that I haven’t watched its prequel. Usually I’m not a huge fan of TV series, simply because I personally prefer the excitement and that kind of sense of reality brought by big screen. Well, but I think I quite enjoy watching this show.

Sammul’s storyline is sort of sad. Although he’s a very capable and brilliant lawyer, he doesn’t really receive any good chances and opportunities to get his genius and intelligence shined. What he has to face is the conflict between his career and his girlfriend’s family. Well, but there’s nothing to blame. It isn’t her fault at all. She has been such a nice girl and great daughter all the way through. And what really matters here is that she has sacrificed for Vincent (Sammul) so much that all she dreams about is to have a perfect family with the man she loves, for whom she probably would do all the things she could. I think, in this sense, I quite like Selena Li’s character who has that kind of sweetness and quietness in her face. Then Vincent really wants to do something good with his job and to reach that kind of career peak he has been struggling for, the real problem comes up that his professionalism and ambitions hurt not only his girlfriends’ parents but also the woman he loves. That must be some way really hard to take and something really difficult to approach.

I don’t know, but this show just reminds of the Family Man movie starring Nicolas Cage back in 2000(I suppose), which is a pretty engrossing story about “what would happen” and “which is more important, pro-capitalist or pro-family”. Survivor’s Law II may not really go that far or deep discussing such life topics. Yet, I think it still does do a terrific job in pulling off a career-family dilemma facing tons of civilized human beings nowadays. Probably not exactly the same problems or issues, but the “what to choose “questions are all out there. So what to choose, which one can be the right option? I’ve no idea, maybe I’m simply too lazy to think of a possible answer, or more exactly a proper answer. Well, but right now what I’m sure about is that I want to know what’s about to happen next in the show.

Today is the 6th day of my being in Vancouver. Time past so fast, just in the blink of an eye we’ve done with the first round. I’m going to Calgary tomorrow. I heard it’s pretty cold out there, fortunately I’ve brought the coat with me, so I think it won’t be a big problem.

As you guys read on Sammul's Twitter, he arrived at Vancouver three days ago for the rehearsal stuff. Sammul is going to make his musical debut on Sunday, I mean this Sunday. So only two days left...

I'm pretty excited about the whole thing, well, still excited even I'm not going. Actually I was wondering if Sammul is going to speak English in the show...As I know, many fans will go see this musical. So we can get to know it very soon. Also, hopefully, they can bring us some scoops or interesting round-ups. so talk to you guys later and take care.

I watched the final on Friday... no more PAK KIU!! *sobs* The ending was very exciting, especially the final fallout with Lap Man, Pak Kiu and Hao Gor! *explodes into bubbles of glee* Also, very sweet BROMANCE scenes as our boys reminisce their time back at the Academy.. aww, they were so young and carefree back then! And my, how has their BROMANCE grown! lolz.. I still remember when they were mortal enemies! *though, more Lap Man's fault than Pak Kiu's - Pak Kiu so innocent *Was very disappointed that the writers didn't take the perfect chance for Bromantic moment when our two heroes were hurt by Hao Gor... That's HK writers for ya >.< But it make up for it, here's a little of how it could've went (in spoilers in case those that haven't watched don't want to be spoiled):

After Hao Gor is chased away by the police force...Pak Kiu (crawls over to Lap Man on the ground): Ah Man... Ah Man, please don't die!! *manly tears of manliness streams down his cheeks*Ah Man: *weak* Pak Kiu... I... I have something to tell you...Pak Kiu (with Man in his arms): Shhh, don't speak, you're going to be ok... *winces at his own injury*Ah Man: Pak Kiu... you're... you're hurt too... The second to last episode was on yesterday night, and boy was it ever so exciting! I was watching with my housemate's Grandma, and the poor lady was gasping in fright at the unexpected twists and turns! Pak Kiu was extremely HOT in his PINK T-SHIRT OF HOTNESS, and OMG, did sparks FLY when he was trying to convince Lap Man to go back to the police station with him... awww... BROMANCE!!! Pak Kiu SAVED Lap Man's life!! *jumps for joy* And more shots of his incredible shooting skills! No bad for a man who had a fear of shooting a year or so ago! Stupid Lap Man though, just running off like that after Pak Kiu got knocked in the head! T_T Though that could've been because he was aware of Pak Kiu's special ability to HEAL THYSELF, because one minute he was in the hospital with a bandage on his head, and the next minute, he was visiting Chiu Sir without a head injury! hahha... He was the guest-of-honour for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of Wing On Travel. He talked about planning to go scuba-diving in Sabah (East Malaysia) since he's already obtained his scuba-diving license last year. The reporter asked if he would bring along his rumoured GF, Kaki. He replied he likes to travel alone. He doesn’t like to go with others, even very close friends, because then he can enjoy more freedom. Girlfriend maybe another story. Most of the time he traveled alone so he could get up any time he liked, go anywhere or eat anything he liked. However, even though he won’t go scuba-diving with Kaki, he would spend his birthday with Kaki cos they are going to perform in Macau together.

Once when he was in Japan, a Japanese girl suddenly darted in front of him, shove a piece of paper into his hands and ran off immediately. The note said that she would like to make friend with Sammul and she left her contact details. Sammul said she was “ok cute”. But he didn’t make the call to her for fear of his own safety.

He also said later on he will have an opportunity to go to a university to give a talk on environmental protection, to share his concepts of a “green” life with the students. When asked how’s his preparation, he giggled, and said he’s considering whether he needs to prepare some powerpoints to do some serious presentation with his computer. Anyways, EU is sadly on its final week of broadcast here in Australia. I for one, am going to miss my daily dose of Sammul! *sobs* Hopefully they'll show his new series Tiger Wong Snatches the Bride soon, though I have a feeling Sammul cross dressing, as cute and hilarious that is, will never be as hot as Mr. Lee Pak Kiu and his GUESS by Marciano wardrobe!

EU's action is definitely hotting up, with suspicion and mutiny among the ranks in the triads. One thing I'm positively absolutely SURE of at this very point in time...Ah Zhong is TOTALLY devoted and in LOVE with Hao Gor! That's the only explanation for it! All his disappointed looks when Hao Gor is flirty with Sum Jie, all the elaborate plans to kill her... no normal "friend" can be THAT devoted!

I also noted that towards the end of the series, Sum Jie hangs around Pak Kiu a LOT!! I mean, after she's devastated by the truth of how Tin Gor died and finding out the exact location of the drugs factory, who does she first call? Pak Kiu! Not to mention all those lonely times spent together farewelling Laughing... And you know what else?Besides her killer, the last person Sum Jie contacted before she died... was Pak Kiu!

I know Sum Jie is slightly old for Pak Kiu, but they're seriously so much more tolerable than POT! >.< Also, why does everything always happen to Yuek Bo's EU team? And also that girl cop, whose sister died after Pak Kiu failed to save her? I'm starting to think that the whole of Hong Kong is covered by one EU team, and one junior cop on beat! hahhaha...

Of course, if the whole of Hong Kong was also just covered by one triads investigation team containing a certain Mr. Lee Pak Kiu, I'm gonna be the first in line to join the triads and start committing crimes just to see him try and arrest me in that hot pink T-shirt! *I COULD join the police force, but THAT would mean having to actually work with stupid Yuek Bo - whereby I would totally have killed her by "accidentally" pushing her off a mountain/building/pithole before I ever make it through the ranks into Pak Kiu's triads investigation team*

Although I’m not able to read these Chinese characters, I still can tell, from the scripts on the right bottom, it’s probably an interview done in 1998. Cannot believe Sammul looked so young and innocent back then. Now, obviously, he has grown into a mature man who looks way more manly and even more attractive. Ahhh, my poor little Pak Kiu!! We're up to episode 26 of EU now in Australia, so not far off until the finale. Anyways, episode 26 was full of devastating manly tears for dear Pak Kiu as he realised Laughing's true identity. Although sad, it was fabulous to see Pak Kiu back to his solemn angsty self. It was only at those very moments when he secluded himself into an angsty ball of angst did I remember back to the Pak Kiu of the first Academy installment, and remember how much I missed my boy! Sure, Pak Kiu deserves to be happier than he was back then, but Sammul does angst so well! hehhe... my heart just leaps out to him and all my motherly instincts just wants to hug him into a tight tight ball and never let go!!

There was also a very annoying scene where he's lying down on his side "angsting" and his stupid POT (Yuek Bo) wife tries to cheer him up... he's lying there looking so sweet and sad, and there she is being her usual annoying self with her hands wrapped around his muscular arm *swoons*... when suddenly I had visions of the Fergie MV for "Big Girls Don't Cry", where Fergie slags herself all over an innocent sleepy Milo Ventimiglia >.<...

That's when I thought to myself that I really must stop this horrible vision, and so convinced myself that it was really Lap Man there instead of POT... Needless to say, I almost spontaneously combusted from my own imagination.

On other bits, Sum Jie is definitely more shifty than I make her out to be, although her and Yau Yau's horrible acting skills seriously had me grasping at straws!! Not saying that the actresses who play Yau Yau and Sum Jie are bad at acting, but the characters themselves, when trying to pretend they know nothing about Lap Man being undercover in front of Hao Gor was SO BAD!! >.< And Lap Man (not Ron, but the character) is also the worst actor EVER... like seriously, couldn't he have put in more effort in trying to convince Sum Jie that he wasn't an undercover??? O_O

Also: The possibility of Sum Jie and Pak Kiu continues to amuse me...hahha, especially when they were "farewelling" Laughing Gor with all their white flowers... seriously, SO MUCH more chemistry than Pak Kiu and POT! >.<

Well, but then I couldn't help but think why not, it's a personal site, literally owned by me. I really would like to share something with you guys.

So how are you guys doing?
Many things are going on recently. I'm plain trying to get my life together and keep up with all the deadlines. Fortunately, things turned out way better than I expected, at least so far.
I felt really happy to see people stopping by in here and getting the info of their interests.

Another noteworthy thing is that Annie decided to join me running this site, specifically translating Sammul's blog entries. A million thanks to Annie. I know you're running your own site and I really appreciate your time and help.

Not much Sammul on EU tonight though, it was mainly about the triads, and how EVERYONE is like... undercover doing something. In fact, I'm so confused at this point that I wouldn't be surprised if Pak Kiu popped a gun at the police and declared "MUahahhaha... I was actually an undercover triad all the time..." Hmm... then he can join Ah Man and Hao Gor and have manly hot threesome conversations which will make my television *and me* explode in glee! Yay!! ^^ Highlight of this episode was definitely not seeing Yuek Bo for a WHOLE HOUR! Though, her Sum Jie did mention her once, as did Laughing. He gave Sum Jie some flowers and told her that she could give them to Yuek Bo for her wedding or something *puke puke*. The scene was slightly more entertaining when I started having visions of the flowers turning into mini guns that would point their heads at Yuek Bo and shoot her... *yes, I have a violent and evil mind sometimes*

Today’s work is pretty interesting, because in such an economic downturn, this travel agency, besides generating high profit, even is expanding their business. It’s such a pleasure to participate in such an event. I firmly believe that as long as the travel schedule is well planed, as said that the meager profit but high turnover, the company should have high profit while creating employment opportunities, which are the benefits of mechanization.

After that had to rush to Chai Wan to take photos and film a clip for Red Cross. This time I am the event's ambassador with Paralympics gold medal winner (Su Hua Wei (?)). The other time when I presented him with a medal, I felt that he was a very nice and polite person. But this time because of schedule conflict, I din get to meet him, but from the praises conferred on him by the work crew, my impression of him has become better.

Everyone has his own way to make contribution. As long as you don’t give up, your effort will finally be paid of one day. Please support the events of Red Cross and the people in need of help. EU was positively spew-tastic last night with all the Pak Kiu proposing to the stupid POT (Yuek Bo). My only reassurance was that she was minutes away from being blown into smithereens by the bomb! And is it just me, or does Pak Kiu and Sum Jie have a lot of chemistry?? Or maybe it's just the DUF effect (that is, the "Designated Ugly Friend" effect, in that if you place something very normal (Pak Kiu and Sum Jie's chemistry) next to something absolutely horrifically bad (Yuek Bo and Pak Kiu's...what chemistry?) then it seems really really really good!). Actually, I believe that Pak Kiu can have more chemistry with a Pot Plant than stupid Yuek Bo >.< *this bomb scene is one of the most cringworthy scenes throughout the whole show. ~x( I talked about that scene quite a bit with cherishheart. Even though I can interpret it correctly now, it’s still as weird as you can image! *shudder*

EU last night didn't feature much of Sammul, though there was another smokey scene of him and Hao Gor together...wheee! The hoyay scale of Ah Zhong and Hao Gor now...wooweee... Ah Zhong went out of his way to scheme a plan and get rid of his "love" competition Sum Jie! Hahhahar! The scene when he was arguing with Hao Gor about how he needed to consider his "priorities" and NOT be with Sum Jie was so very high on the hoyay radar...lolz...
C'mon BROMANCE, you're gonna have to pick up the scale! Watched another episode of EU last night... not much going on in terms of Bromance, but I do like that new older guy that has entered Pak Kiu's team (not so much Kaki...>.<). There was this one scene when Pak Kiu invited his team mates to his place to celebrate, and then Lap Man appears and starts introducing himself like "Hi, I'm Pak Kiu's housemate"... lolz, and all I kept thinking was "Oh my, he sounds like a spouse introducing himself to his husband/wife's work friends!!" LOLZ...Tonight's episode looks like it could be slightly more Pak Kiu heavy... one can only hope... Saw another episode of E.U last night, and it was quite Sammul heavy, which was cool... unfortunately it was also very Kaki heavy, and her "Maaaameeee" is really starting to get on my nerves! As is her teeth (I know, it's not her fault, but I can't help things that annoy me!)At one stage, I was watching after she jumped into the sea and Sammul saved her (argh, why Sammul, WHY? Should've left her to DIE!! :)"> ), anyways, throughout that scene all I could think of was "Man... the male is so much "prettier" that the girl... it's kinda wrong" hee. But Sammul did look very pretty in that scene!! I swear they made him put on lippy or something!!! Oh, and this other scene, Pak Kiu was with Lap Man, and he was wearing a PINK T-shirt, whilst Lap Man was wearing a BLUE T-shirt!! Awww, sooo cute!! And sooooooo coupl-ey of them!!! ^^

Eeeeeeeeeek! I just saw the previews of EU for Monday, as well as a preview for a new quiz show to be aired next week in the slot just before EU... it's the same TV quiz show that Sammultoy's article was from, so yay!! Can't wait for Ron and Sammul's episode to show up! Also, the preview for EU is so sad, poor Pak Kiu, got pushed into the lockers by Lap Man!! And the look on his face, awww, he looked a wittle boy being bullied by his bwestest fwrend in the whole wide world... (and of course, his one and only true looove)

Wow, my E.U is definitely picking up with the Angsty Bromance after Ron's become undercover! Poor Pak Kiu, was soooo sad when he had to testify against LAp Man, and then later when Lap Man went and pushed him against the locker... *sniff sniff* And then, tonight, when he found Lap Man hanging out with Laughing ... Awww, I'm starting to think that Lap Man is a real jerk for not letting Pak Kiu know about his "status"... (I know he has valid reasons, but to see Pak Kiu so heart broken is so sad )

Just finished watching E.U again, aww, I know Pak Kiu's got a promotion and everything, but I totally MISS his uniform!! Still looks hot as anything though... hahha, and in this one scene where it was flitting back between him and Ron, perhaps Ron's lips were very pale, but I SWEAR Sammul had lipstick on...lolz! In terms of Bromance, it's looking quite doom and gloom recently, since Pak Kiu thinks Lap Man is part of the triads, and Lap Man is leading him on because he can't let Pak Kiu know the truth! It's so to see Pak Kiu so upset... He really really wants to help his one true love turn back on the right path... to be together with HIM of course! And I'm sure having to live in such a disgusting and messy apartment with La Ba, that Lap Man really misses his one true love Pak Kiu as well!

Another night of EU... Yay! Pak Kiu is about to find out that Man's an undercover! So smart of him to figure things out by outting two and two together! And the sweetest moment of the night of course goes to when Ah Man finished helping them with the helmet head hitting people and then Pak Kiu chases after him, and Ah Man's all *gangster* "Whaddaya want?", and Pak Kiu was just "I wanted to wish you a happy birthday..." *because despite all our current differences, you are, and always will be my one true love*

Another episode of E.U, more love for Bromance, more hatred of Kaki and the desire for her to go jump into a pond (or that nice big harbour that Pak Kiu and her keep jogging alongside would do nicely as well!). I'm up to the episode where Kaki's Mum got knocked on the head, and OMG, Kaki's acting is really really disturbing there. Sum Jie is too nice for her own good, because if I were Sum Jie, I'd just get one of my men to off Kaki and live happily ever after with my Mum! Stupid Kaki >.< *I still remember the scene you just mentioned, where Kakei's character is sooooo infuriating. I found the more I watched EU without skipping her scenes the more despicable her character turned out to be, which is just banking on the fact that she is appallingly annoying but nothing I'm going to get on my high horse about. And a bad role always has room to get worse. I bet you will see more distasteful scenes from her in the upcoming episodes (especially when Sammul got into trouble), which completely pissed me off and pushed me become a naysayer of her. My unending love always belongs to Bromance. *

Now for daily round up of EU... despite not much happening last night in terms of Bromance, it was definitely a very hoyaytastic episode... lolz! Especially the part when Laughing tells Hao Gor's sidekick Ah Zhong that Hao Gor is interested in Sum Jie, and then Ah Zhong got all upset! WAHahhaha... I was thinking "Hmm, that Hao Gor and Ah Zhong... definitely something going on THERE!" And the moment was topped when as I was thinking that, Laughing *smart guy that he is* commented "Why do you look so upset? You're not GAY are you??"

And of course, there was that scene at the hospital where Hao Gor tells Pak Kiu to try and convince Yuek Bo to let her Mum have the operation... wowee, the sparks sure flew!! Both of them in tight perfect fitting suits, determined expressions, good vs. bad...I think my television was almost about to explode with the hotness!!There's more Hao Gor and Pak Kiu on tonight's preview, so looking forward to that too!!

Oh, and speaking of tight perfect fitting suits, I have noticed that the very very first thing that scrolls up the credits every single night is a line that says Sammul's clothing is endorsed by GUESS!! Just him though, everyone else doesn't have their individual sponsor listed... wheee, gooo Sammul! GUESS people are sure smart to model their clothes on that totally edible body...hee.

Eeeeeeeeeee Kelly, Sammul gets into trouble? Aww, the poor boy!! Stupid Yuek Bo >.< *today’s roundup kept me in stitches, completely. ooh, it’s such an entertaining and brilliant reading. Probably because I only paid my tons of attention to Sammul, I didn’t notice Ah Zhong had a HUGE crash on Hao Gor. I definitely would regret it if I missed this. Hahar… I bet your tv set must feel breathless with the unparallel heat and get too out of its mind to explode itself. LOL.
I’ve noticed Sammul wearing Guess in EU. I cannot remember the specific epi, yet I saw Sammul wearing Marciano shirt for sure.
Yup, Sammul experienced some hard time in the last five episodes. Kakei’s reaction/response was totally intolerable and unforgivable there. You and you little roommate are straight up geniuses. Add to all this the fact that it's completely reasonable/understandable throughout to the point where I have no hesitation in calling her character the worst role ever and easily the most straight annoying character.*

Synopsis:
Poor scholar Chow Man Bun proposed marriage to rich young mistress Wong Sau Ying but was rejected by her mother Madam Wong. "An Instant Touching Moment"

Recently, there was a friend of mine who was fired by his boss. Seeing him that unhappy, I asked him to go hiking together, hoping to cheer him up. From the beginning of the trip, he was telling me about his old boss' meanness and injustice. We haven't even hiked that far, but he was already so tired, so we had to go back. I was just going to relieve his boredom, but who would have known that he could get so fiery. So I decided to tell him this story.

The Stone Story

There was a school in a remote village whose two of its students were in a fight. Once the teacher heard this, she ran out and found out what was going on. But they were still fighting. So she yelled at them, "Stop!" The students stopped and behaved once they saw their teacher. But she still could see their faces were flaming with rage. She didn't immediately punish them, but instead she asked them a question. She said, "In your heart, do you still have others that you're mad at?" The two students nodded their heads. Then the teachers gave out a bag to each of them and said, "I won't punish you today, instead I'll play a game with you guys. For the whole week, you have to think of the people you're mad at or you hate, write their names on a paper, and then go to the riverside to find some stones and stick the paper on the stones. The more you hate the person, the more you have to find a bigger stone to stick the paper on. If you don't really hate the person, then just find a smaller stone. You have to put the stones in the bag and bring it everyday for me to check, OK?" The kids agreed at once, because they were playing games instead of being punished. After school, they went to the riverside, competing to find stones. On the next day, they brought their bags that were filled with stones back to their school. They were discussing with each other, who had the most stones, and whose bag was the heaviest. Day after day, they had much more stones, and their bags were getting heavier and heavier. And one day, one of them couldn't take it anymore, and raised his hand to tell the teacher. "Teacher, it's very heavy and hard." The teacher was smiling and silent. The other student said, "Bringing the stones everyday is even heavier than bringing our textbooks, it's burdensome." The teacher just couldn't help but smiling and she said, "Why don't you just put your bags that are full of stones down?" The teacher was teaching them how to forgive others and not to cherish grudges like treasures in their hearts nor to put them on their shoulders. Because at the end of the day, the ones that are suffering the most are themselves. After she said that, one of the students went to the riverside and put back the stones. The others then followed. They decided not to bear grudges anymore everyday.

It's good that these children finally understood that the more grudges you have, the more harder it will be for you to live. Actually if we don't hate others and bear grudges, our lives would be much happier and more relaxing.

I respect my work, so before each project, I will use a lot of time to prepare in order to gain the best. For example when I was filming "The Academy" series, I needed my body to be fit, I worked hard on my fitness, so that besides my acting, my fitness, my movements wouldn't be under suspicion, completely matching the manner and physical look of a policeman, hypnotising myself in believing that I was one of Hong Kong's thirty thousand in the police force, having the responsibility of keeping the peace, and overcoming crime.

I respect my character, as a citizen of Hong Kong, often reminding myself that I need to abide by the law and keep justice, upholding my responsibility of being a good citizen, making Hong Kong into a city worthy of praise.

Sammul Chan Red Cross Fanatic

Since joining Red Cross Youth Unit in Secondary One, Sammul became very attached to Red Cross Society. Sammul said, “At that time, I was very enthusiastic in collecting souvenir badges for volunteer service. Besides having a mission, I found that the badges had very special designs, so even after I left school, I still collect Red Cross badges from all over the world.” Over the past years, no matter he was overseas on vacation or on business, he would visit the local Red Cross Society, in the hope of buying some souvenirs. Sammul can be said to be a worldwide collector of Red Cross souvenirs.

The best supporter

From collecting service badges in the beginning, to collecting anything related to Red Cross later, Sammul is definitely the best supporter of Red Cross Society.

Top Left: Australia

A long trek (White bear)

For just A$5, this white fur bear, product of Australia, can follow you back to HK. The trip for the donation was very memorable to Sammul, he said, “I was filming Triumph in the Skies in Australia, someone told me there was a Red Cross Society near where I lived, so I walked there, which took me one and half hours.”

Hard times of the story behind (Badge that looked like a medal of honour)

This Medal-of-Honour–like badge was found in a second-hand shop, he said, “This badge belonged to an Aussie who had served Red Cross as a volunteer for 20 years. I was elated to have discovered such a badge, but on the other hand I wondered if that person had gone through some hard times such that he had to dispose of such a valuable badge.

Middle Left: America

Unnamed luggage (Luggage tags)

These two luggage tags were from American Red Cross. They should be very useful to Sammul who is a frequent traveller. Sammul did not wish to unwrap the plastic cover, when we tried to check for him to see whether the tags were intact, he cried, "No!"

Won't expire (Two Candies)”

Recently the incorrect expiry dates on some pharmaceutical products by a manufacturer caused some upheavals. These two candies from American Red Cross Society did not have expiry dates, but Sammul did not mind, he wouldn’t eat them anyway, so whether they have expired doesn’t matter to him.

The most expensive (Two badges)

Do not despise these two badges, they are the most expensive among all of Sammul’s collection. After working in Canada, he went to the Red Cross store before going to the airport. The staff there were very enthusiastic in showing him what they had, and taking photos with him, consequently he missed his flight and had to buy another air ticket.

Earthquake bag

Many people go to Japan for a shopping spree, but Sammul would head first to the local Red Cross Society to purchase local souvenirs. Japan often experiences earthquakes, therefore Japan Red Cross has on sale these canvas bags used for putting essential belongings when running for life. The design of the bag is very practical, but of course, I don't wish it to be of use.”

Dainty bandages (Bandages)

Can you guess what's inside these pretty wrappings? Face oil tissues? Writing pads? They are actually Japan Red Cross bandages. Since all his collections are priced possessions, Sammul would not open the wrappings, so what's the difference between these bandages and the normal ones, we have no way to find out.

Just close by

Throughout the whole filming process, Sammul was thinking of visiting the local Red Cross, but he didn’t want to leave the crew and disrupt filming. Fortunately, Iceland Red Cross was just nearby to where they were filming. Sammul of course grabbed the opportunity to pay a visit immediately.

A trip of no regrets (Stationery)

over there, the currency was still very high, but he did not tighten his belt, he bought many Red Cross stationery, he said, “Rarely can I be there, of course I must buy!”

This album is a collection of Red Cross souvenir stamps on over tens of countries spanning across the recent one hundred year. Sammul bought it from a second hand shop for a few hundred pounds, he said, ”Of course I bargained with the shop owner, but he could see that I was very eager to get it, so he wouldn’t even reduce a cent.”

What are the contents of these two books? Sammul, who does not understand Thai, is also uncertain. He said, “I think they’re about Thailand Red Cross Society, although I don’t understand Thai, I really wish to own some books about the Red Cross Society, so I bought them.”

When he was in France, not only did Sammul search through stalls and second hand shops, he also visited Red Cross headquarters and bought these paper weight and document holder. You can be sure that if Red Cross had other daily necessities, Sammul would definitely purchase them.

You may think that these badges are not colourful enough, but actually they were all manually painted. Sammul said, ”They were all from European countries from early last century, for example France, Italy and England, the patterns were all manually painted, it’s very hard to find such badges now.

Due to religious reasons, Red Cross Society in Muslim countries are called Red Crescent Society, the logo is also changed to a red crescent moon. But in recent years Malaysia has changed the red crescent”back to red cross. You can see the difference by comparing the old badge and the new badge.

Priceless

The Soviet Russia officially dissolved in 1991 and became the Russian Federation, therefore, these USSR badges became 'out-of-print"”Although the value of these badges are unknown, to Sammul they must be priceless .

Thoughtful fans (Badges)

Sammul's fans know what their idol's passion is, so they also join in the collection of Red Cross souvenirs, and give their collections to Sammul. These badges were given to Sammul by a mainland China fan, he even thoughtfully put labels on them, to label which ones were from former Soviet Russia and which ones were from before the Cultural Revolution era.

After looking at Sammul’s collections from all over the world, certainly we can’t leave out the place which Sammul is most attached to, the Hong Kong Red Cross Society. As Red Cross Youth Ambassador, Sammul wishes to set up an exhibition hall which is open to the public, so that people can get to know Red Cross Society.

Sammul said human blood will degenerate every 3-4 months, therefore all these years he will donate blood regularly, he hopes to do what he can to help others.

This gift souvenir of Red Cross has Sammul’s image on its wrapper, therefore he said proudly, I feel very honoured that Red Cross put my face on the wrapper.” Sammul, you are so fervent in promoting Red Cross, you deserve it!

Regardless of Size

These three T-shirts that were from different locations are of sizes large, medium and small respectively, Sammul said, “When I buy T-shirts, I'd like to be able to wear them of course, but if they don't have my size, I would still buy it for keepsake."

Before and after

HandoverHong Kong experienced a lot of changes before and after the Handover, it was the same with Red Cross, the badge on the left is after the Handover, the one on the right is before the Handover, the difference is that the former does not have the word “British”on it.

Serving Society

As a member of Red Cross Youth Unit in secondary school, Sammul took part in a lot of community service after school and during the holidays. After performing his service, he would receive badges as an encouragement.

Obsolete coat

The navy blue coat on Sammul was the uniform of Red Cross Youth Unit in the early days, they are no more in production now.

Please give blood

In order to attract more people to donate blood, besides badges, Red Cross also gave out mini hangers such as these as souvenirs. Sammul said as a matter of factly, “Not many people in Hong Kong are willing to donate blood, therefore Red Cross needs to come up with more creative ideas. I appeal to you not to hold back, be a blood donor.”

Past papers

This book and the three sets of exam papers at the back, were used by Sammul when he sat for the first-aid exams. Although many textbooks and exam papers in his high school were lost, Red Cross-related books and exam papers were kept intact. You can see that Sammul really cherished everything related to Red Cross.

To commemorate establishment

This badge was given to Sammul in his first year of joining Red Cross, it was a badge to commemorate the founder of Red Cross Society, Jean Henri Dunant. Sammul said, “This was the first badge I received that was not for my service.”

Top right: In memory of blood

Many of Red Cross badges and souvenirs were bought by Sammul when he traveled around the world, some others were given to him in exchange of his blood. This is because since the age of 16, he would donate blood regularly. To encourage and to express gratitude, Red Cross gives out badges to the blood donors.

[Fans' Prattle] Sammul's Career Path

I feel a bit confuzzled after reading this interview, especially for this paragraph above. I don’t get why Sammul still chooses to work for TVB other than to leave and shift to work in China. As mentioned above, TV shows filmed in China are marketed to the Greater China Area, where obviously way more audience with diverse tastes and of different requirements can be targeted and reached. In my opinion, China absolutely stands for a much more huge market to get in and a much bigger stage to take on. Compared to China, HK is only a tiny place. The taste and demand for the TV shows are pretty much predictable. They're right there, what you need to do is just to grab a calculator. The market also can easily get saturated. And knowing from other interviews that TVB doesn’t treat Sammul very nicely, not giving him enough chances to perform or good opportunities to seek breakthroughs, I don’t think he wants himself to get typecasted or something. And he seems already pretty popular in mainland China. So why not just give another try?

Sammul has answered this before. I forgot where I see it, but, I remember what he said. He said he still film series for TVB because he started out in TVB and whenever he goes back to film a TVB series, he will be able see a lot of friends (i.e fellow TVB actors).

But, even career wise, I don't think it is a wise choice for Sammul to just focus on China market. HK market might be small, but, TVB series is distributed all over the world, the latest being Korea. In HK, if u disappear from HK entertainment circle for too long, you might be forgotten. So, it's good for Sammul to maintain his popularity in HK. For a non-managed artist, TVB actually treated him quite well. They let him film the anniversary program (that Iceland documentary) and he also has a lot of opportunities to try other things like hosting, dubbing etc. He might not be a leading man in his series, but, I don't think he is typecasted in TVB. He has played a villain, a comic character, a righteous character, a jerk/loser, a gay guy and the most recent, a cross-dresser. If he just focus on China market, then he will truly be typecasted, because most of the Mainland series he filmed are Yu Zheng's series. All Yu Zheng's series are heavy on romance. So, if he just filmed Yu Zheng's series, he will just be playing a hopeless romantic again and again and again.

Lastly, Sammul's home and family is in HK. No matter how successful he is outside HK, his root is still in HK. Career is important, but, I believe family is also important. Many actors who has work in Mainland for many years also express their wish to come back to HK one day because it's their home.

reiyi, thanks a bunch for your thorough explanations. I think I understand your main points. Wow~~you definitely know Sammul and the whole Asian entertainment industry way better than I do.I merely assumed TVB was an entertainment/broadcasting company in HK, like NBC or Fox in the states, but it seems like TVB’s influence is way more widespread and more significant than I initially thought, possibly all over the world, which is just like what you and yogurtpo told. I’m not sure if this is sort of like a culture monopoly. To me, the whole thing is just so impressive.

I actually haven’t seen any single mainland TV shows. All I know so far is coming from the comments, news reports and other stuff I’ve read. Yet it’s still understandable that it’s hard to get in and fit in a new market/place holding different cultures, languages and even economical situations, since as I know HK and mainland China quite differ from each other at least considering these respects. And I think what really matters is what Sammul wants to and plans to pursue, as long as he enjoys his work, his life and what he has been doing. You know, that’s his life.

May I ask if it’s difficult for actors from HK to pursue a promising career in mainland China, does the same thing also happen to actors from mainland China who attempt to launch their careers in HK? Such development boundary is more two sides or only a one-side thing?

Kelly, TVB and ATV are the two main broadcasters for Hong Kong, and TVB has beaten ATV's ratings pretty much ever since it existed. Although ATV gets it's fair share of viewers, Hong Kong's television industry is in a way, monopolized by TVB. They also have forages into the international asian market through rental shops and satellite, and is probably the best way for a celebrity from Hong Kong to get the exposure they need. Therefore, it does Sammul every good to stay with them! And not signing a full contract allows him the freedom to do other things on top of TVB (because if you sign TVB's contract, you're locked down to TVB's demands, which are well and good if they're trying to promote you, but really sucks if for ANY reason you accidentally anger the wrong people and they decide to stop promoting you!).

As for Mainland series, their audience is mainly Mainland China only, and very few series from the Mainland gain the popularity to be broadcasted elsewhere, even those with high profile casts. Mainland artists generally don't film TVB series because there is no demand for it since TVB has their own list of actors and actresses to choose from (Plus, unless they are A-list, Hong Kong people generally won't recognise the Mainland actor/actress, and the ones that are A-list would probably never choose TVB productions because of low pay). There have been Hong Kong and Mainland collaborations before though, but these are rare.

Yogurtpo, thanks a million for the detailed explanations. I see the whole TVB thing so much clearer now. I also googled TVB and HK TV industry yesterday. Just as you told, TVB is such a magnate corp and powerhouse in Asia’s broadcasting and entertainment industry. I read an article today saying that even Maggie Cheung started her career from filming TVB shows. Wow~~that’s just amazing, coz Maggie is such a talented and respected actress. It’s also good to learn mainland TV shows actually don’t share the same actor resources with TVB’s and serve different audience. At first I just assumed there might be some overlaps. Now it’s obvious that mainland audience goes for TVB shows, but HKers are not into mainland shows.

I think you guys are probably right and it really can be a wise choice for Sammul to stay at TVB. It makes perfect sense since sometimes it’s influence/coverage that counts, especially in showbiz.

Preface:

I never thought that this program would film for longer than three hours, so everyone wasn't prepared and came without first eating dinner. In the end, after the filming and adding on the time spent mucking aorund with Sammul outside and waiting for the Taxi, it was already past midnight by the time I returned home. But having no dinner is okay, everyone was full on what they had seen!

Clothing:

Sammul's Fashion Check of the day - Black jacket, whire shirt with blue dots, his jeans were those baggy hip-hop ones where you could walk into a supermarket and steal a bag of rice without anyone noticing, A red checked belt (this was quite special), Silver shiny tennis shoes (from the RMK function)

"Low Profile" Sammul Fans:

The filming this time was in the third production area, a very small recording studio. In the game show there were four female modles. Sitting in front of us were two young males holding up a sign waying "KAWAII", and when we asked, they were actually fans of one of the girl models who's name was KAWAII, the model was quite cute. When Sammul and the other guests entered, the cameraman told us to yell out "Pak Kiu", but we said no, we're very low profile. When Sammul stood on the stage as the paparazzi took pictures, we suddenly all yelled out loudly "SAMMUL"! In the end, aside from scaring Sammul (who put on his usual evil cracking up face), we even scared the boys sitting in front of us, and heard someone say "they're low profile?"

The cheeky floor boards:

The set had a metal part on the floor that was sitting slightly higher than the rest of the floor. This little metal part tripped up Sammul, Ron and the model girl who was on our side. First it was Sammul, when running across he tripped dramatically on the metal, and he might have even kicked up a small piece of something. rofl. It was so loud, and a bit embaressing. Then in the middle Ron tripped on it a little. In the end even the model girl wasn't lucky enough to miss it, and because she was wearing high heels, even her shoe came off, and she almost fell onto the floor. Luckily Ronw as standing beside her at the time and held her up.

Covering everything:

It's obvious that Sammul is a very exam orientated person, always thinking of ways to make his answer correct. For example in the first part of the game show it was a segment where they had to watch a bit of footage and then answer questions, and one of the questions was the implied meaning behind "Zi Sun Chi" (beats me if I know... something about the measure of generations?). The players had to write the answers up onto a white board. Sammul was responsible for the wrting in his team (and Ha Yu complimented that his writing was very nice), and he almost write out an essay, writing down so many answers to cover every aspect!

Active 11:

One of the quesitons was a numbers one, asking the meaning of certain numbers in the names of TV shows, and the question was asking what the number "11" meant in the show "Active 11"? The answer was that it was the 11th year of TVB's acting class, so Ha Yu asked Ron which year he was from, and Ron said that he was from the 1st year (of course Sammul didn't let go of the chance to call Ron an "elder"). And then Ha Yu asked Sammul which year he was from, and Sammul answered: "I don't have a year/I'm terminal!" (Umm, this one is a bit hard to explain, in cantonese, the word which means "end" and the word which means "don't have" both is pronounced "muut" (or mo/mei for mando speakers). Anyways, the word "Kei" (Qi) can be both the "Year" or "Date" and to say "Muut Kei", Sammul was trying to say he didn't have a "year" because he didn't come out from TVB's acting class, but he was joking and used the same sounding words to say that he was "No date" as in "Terminal")

Hearts:

The other team consisted of Hung Tin Ming and Nikki Chow, and maybe because they were on a mental block (not Hung Tin Ming's fault), they rarely answered any quesitons right, so when answering the questions they jokingly drew two love hearts to "bribe" the host. However, when Sammul's team came to answer the questions they also drew on two love hearts, Sammul saying "They can draw hearts, we can draw hearts too!", and on the next answer, he even increased it to four hearts! Hahha, they really shouldn't compete with him, he'll always find a chance to repay them back "N" times!

Nurses:

In one of the segments there was a very large prop which was a shoe about to step on something. The questions were asked and the two teams had to fight to answer them, and the team that answered both had to put part of their body under the shoe, which would step on them if they got the answer wrong (it looked really scary, even had smoke coming out). At this time, two models dressed as nurses would come on, the nurse for the EU team (Ron and Sammul) was cuter, and Sammul often made her laugh, pulling on her so she couldn't go over to the other team to attend to their "wounds". One time, the EU team answered wrong and got stepped on, Sammul pretended to faint on the ground, perhaps he was waiting for the nurse to come save him, but before the nurse got there, Hung Tin Ming had already rushed forward to give Sammul "mouth to mouth" rofl.

Foot Massage:

One of the questions had a guest Master that came on to perform a series of fist fighting stances, and Nikki Chow jokingly commented that she recognised the Master as a foot massager. Sammul then jokingly asked whether the kung fu Master would before massaging ask "Miss, do you want some foot massage?" and then first show her some kung fu stances. He even copied some of the kung fu stances, it was very funny. Sammul's childhood ADHD was on play last night, using a lot of energy to create a good show.

Wing Chun Fighting Stances:About the Master, he was actually there for a question concerning Wing Chun fighting stances, and was there to show them an example. The question was what other name is Wing Chun fighting stances also known by? No one there had seen Ip Man (movie about Wing Chun I guess), so nobody knew the answer. Ha Yu then gave them a hint, saying that the name could also be used to describe Sammul. So the answers began to fly everywhere, and a Granny and Audience even said "Yu Nu (Virgin Girl) Fighting Stance", scaring Sammul to jump up and yell "Me? Virgin GIRL??" rofl. Us "Low Profile" fans tried to give tips by mouthing "Jun Zi (Gentlemen) fight stance" (At least we made him a Gentleman...Kaka), but Sammul didn't get us at all, and then he even wrote down a large number of answers including "Liang Zai (Handsome) fighting stance", "Suo Xing (Cool) fighting stance" etc. In the end the answer was "Shao Ye (Young *rich* Master) fighting stance" and Sammul quickly said to Ha Yu, "you should've said Raymond Lam instead!"

MY EU:During the times when they were changing the set, everyone relaxed and rested. Sammul was chatting to the model nurse during this time and because their microphones weren't turned off we could hear what they said. We guessed that the model nurse said to Ron "You series EU", so Sammul jumped in saying "Why do you not say MY series EU? His series EU is also MY series EU!" and even said a couple of practiced sentences. The model nurse could only laugh. (the translation on this one a bit dogey...)

David Lu:The last segment was a bit like "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", and they got guest star David Lu to be the host, asking about "EYT" (a really popular old TV show in HK). The questions really required someone in Mother's generation to answer, everything was dated about a decade ago. One of the questions was how many episodes of EYT was broadcasted over the 27 years it was on tv? Sammul quickly took out his cellphone to use as a calculator, one week is five nights, one year has fifty two weeks, times by twenty seven... His partner Ron SLOWLY read out each of the options on the multiple choice, purposely dragging the time on so Sammul could calculate, hahaha! David Lu kept giving tips, and even saying that his clothes that night was very "undercover"-like (he wore a T-shirt with a picture of a "tie" on it), Sammul immedietely told Ron to wear the same thing and see!

Goodbye Hug:When the program ended, Sammul when to hug the model nurses goodbye, and even signalled to us in the audience to keep the secret, haha! After hugging all four of the models, Hung Tin Ming realised what he was doing and demanded that he get to hug them too! In the end, they said that only the winners were allowed to hug them, haha!

Okay, that's the end of the program, the other bits are about the fans meeting Sammul out in the car park. He was nice enough to stop his car for them and go out to chat and sign autographs and take pictures! *lucky fans*

E.U. Peaks At 41 Points

TVB announced the last week’s ratings. Last Friday, the last two episodes of “Emergency Unit” were broadcast consecutively, peaking at 41 points and grabbed the top spot in ratings last week. The drama averaged 34 points last week, increasing by 4 points.

Since the audience hoped that Michael Tse’s character, Laughing Gor, would come back to life in “Emergency Unit,” TVB filmed a last minute scene in which Michael’s character appears in police uniform. When Michael’s scene was broadcast at 10:28 PM, the ratings increased to 43 points, thus making “Emergency Unit” the series with the highest ratings in the first quarter of 2009. This illustrates the powerful effect of Laughing Gor.

After the finale of “Emergency Unit” was broadcast, TVB received a total of 10 telephone and e-mail complaints that the ending was unsatisfactory and unrealistic. TVB explained that the series was intended to end a certain way, however there were additional scenes which were added last minute. Due to the necessary scenes involving the police force organization, there was limited time to wrap up the remaining loose ends.

TVB noted that [Michael Tse’s scene] was only a “introduction,” thus suggesting that Part 4 of “The Academy” series will be filmed.

Laughing Gor, Michael Tse, who got popular overnight, was attending the final episode party for the night before yesterday, when he left the party, he was really drunk, and even had to be supported by his assistant, and in the meantime, he grabbed everyone he saw, and in the end he even grabbed the male producer and gave a mouth to mouth kiss.

As for Sammul Chan, who left at 12 midnight, was the driver, he said: “So many reporters, and I still have to drive, thus I didn’t drink at all.” At the scene, many fans begged to take a photo together, Sammul accepted all their pleads, and was really friendly.

The dinner gatherings are back! I'm reall yhappy tonight, watching the finale together with a bunch of people is a happy event, the cheers and jeers were all present. The important thing is that everyone worked together to create a memorable series, so great!

In this, I want to thank every brother and sister within our cast and crew, adding such wonderful/exciting memories to my working life.

Growing Up: Sammul Chan

From in 2005 to this year, Chan Pak Kiu has grown up and has matured. In the same way, Sammul Chan, who’s been in show business since 1998 until now, has gone through 11 years of a baptism of fire, and he’s grown to maturity. After all these years, we have always been accompanying him growing up, in the same way, he also has been witnessing our growth.

A Double Character

Sammul’s image has always been good. In internet forums, everyone also uses words like “the handsome boy”, “the good boy”, and other refined wordings to describe him. In the real life, is he also like that? “In my daily life, I’m not as quiet as everyone thinks. Many people think that I’m a silent and gentle person, but actually I’m not like that, because I’m someone who has a double character, as I can sometimes be lively and active, but other times I can be very quiet. Um…I dislike ball games, because when I was still in school I hurt myself in the eye when playing basketball, so I’m a bit afraid by that. Instead, I find water sports enjoyable. I often go surfing and work out in the gym. I also love Thai boxing. I used to go hiking with my friends, which one of my life’s most wonderful times. I went with a bunch of friends to Xi Gong for three days and two nights, and after we’re exhausted from walking, we found a place to camp and take a bath. Too bad I can’t do that anymore these days. Talking of being quiet, I sometimes can be very still, sitting and relaxing in my house not saying anything, just looking at my fish tank."

China and Hong Kong

Everyone would agree that in a year, there must be a period of time where we don’t hear any news about Sammul. Actually, he’s often away for work, and he even could be away for a couple of months. “I would spend a third of a year outside HK, like today got to spend about two or three weeks in Canada, while actually I also has to film in the mainland China. These years, I’ve been used to traveling. Of course in the beginning it was hard, because every time I travel I have to delegate a lot of things to others. I have two cats and a fish tank in my house. The first time I went to China for filming, when I got home from being away for two months, the water in my fish tank was stagnant and there were so many waterweeds growing everywhere. My fish tank was simply in a terrible mess. Although my family would come by and help out taking care of my house, it is still different if it’s me myself who take care of everything. But, I’ve used to it, so have my family.” What is the difference of the working pattern in China and HK? “The working pattern in filming in HK is very tight. We can have two groups working in a day; we shoot outdoors, then indoors afterwards. We have so many things to take care of, and maybe because there are always not enough people to take care of every actor, so that’s why living a life like this really can make someone be under a great mental pressure. But working in China, we have people who take care of things; there are always people who are in charge of the three meals a day and the daily necessities. There are even people who are specialized in makeup and at the same time, taking the actors to the filming site, so the actors can concentrate on remembering the script and throwing themselves into their roles. The procedure there is really conducive for the actors to their work absorption."

Compromising

Viewers think that actors are different from ordinary people. They could not eat, drink, nor sleep in order to deal with their heavy jobs, but Sammul thinks this isn’t a big deal. “Human being is the most proud animal. When you’re struggling to live, there are many things that can be compromised, or when you know that there will be many waves coming, you thus bravely face it. This is a good practice I think. When asked, is it hard? Actually, it’s not that hard. Because there are people out there who have three different jobs, and only get two to three hours of sleep, but their earnings are much less than ours, so it depends on your attitude in adjusting to see this problem. I will always see the bright side like I can work every day and meet my friends so everything will become more relaxing. I’m a weird person. Almost every time whenever I work in HK I can get fat easily. Because the mental pressure is too big, thus I eat often, but at the same time, I don’t have the time to work out, so slowly but surely, I become fat. When I’m too tired, I depend on some supplements, taking one to two of them to maintain my health. “Is it the working rhythm in HK or the job that’s tiring? “The working rhythm in HK is indeed tiring, it seems like it’s forcing you to go ahead. I’m already used to remembering the script. No matter how tired I am, I always read my script at least once before I go to bed so I’ll have an impression of it, and on the next day when I’m doing my makeup I also got to read the script again, sometimes in the car too. After filming in the morning, I have to remember the night’s script, and whenever I have some free time, I’ll read it. This is the rhythm and sometimes it is indeed slightly tiring."

Different Pressures

Many artistes say that filming in China is like going on a vacation that relaxing; it seems like there is no pressure, not like in HK where everything is to be done hurriedly. Is it true? “The pressure in China and HK is different, because the series that we’re filming will be marketed to the greater China, the actors come from different countries, and I have to learn how to get along with them. While in HK, we always meet each other every time, so we’re used to each other’s acting, it’s not a big deal. But when it comes to working with actors who come from different places, we have to get used to everyone’s habits, as living in this world is the biggest artwork ever, and filming outside of HK will always influence my acting. I can still speak Cantonese in my first mainland series, but in my next series I’ll have to use Mandarin, because everyone’s demanding it. Even until now, whenever I have to speak Mandarin, people want me to pronounce every word correctly. So the pressure doesn’t solely come from the acting, it also comes from the different surroundings."

It Gets Harder and Harder

Sammul has played the role Chan Pak Kiu for three times now. Does he feel that it’s easy to play the role again since it’s the third time? “This is just a continuation of the previous role, but it’s doesn’t mean that I can easily master the role, because my role grows along with the episodes. For me, episode 1 is where the viewers accept this role, and they still can feel the freshness and the youthful energy there, no burdens at all. We’ve made progress since we first appeared, because the role is real, and there’s a difference in the development of the actors’ acting skills, as the pressure adds up in every episode, because the viewers have expectations of not wanting to repeat the things in the past, you have to be the same person, but at the same time adding some new elements, which is the greatest challenge. As an actor, one has to warm up first, and he also has to make a mentality adjustment. My craziest time was I’ve once filmed three series at a time, and played three different roles. That was very crazy, because the three characters were very different from each other, so I would have to throw myself into a role and then draw myself back from it incessantly every day, but still it was a good experience for me. Being an actor is like that, we have to be like a chameleon, adapting ourselves according to the surroundings."

Matured and Grown

Sammul has been in show business for 11 years now. He doesn’t change much physically, only looked more mature now, but he must have an enormous change in the way he thinks. “There have been some changes since I entered the showbiz. When I first joined in, I was still a small naïve kid. The entertainment circle is full of excitement and change, as today and tomorrow can have a huge difference. I’m more matured and more cautious now. I used to not knowing of how to handle some things, so I just impulsively went ahead, whenever I fell, I still had the opportunity to stand again, but now since I have more experiences, I know that everyone could not always forgive you when you make these mistakes, so I have to talk the talk and walk the walk. Some people say that I’m boring, but actually I’m not, I don’t want to stir up rumors, because it can make an impact on me and on others. When I was studying radio broadcasting, my supervisor taught me some moral ethics and conduct, which I still remember until now. Actors are actually a part of the media, they have a responsibility towards the public, they shouldn’t set a bad example for the youth, and they have to control themselves well."

Indeed Sammul would find so many puzzling convos here. And one more word, "hunkalicious". It is not in the dictionary, but we use it to describe our "delicious hunk", because he once described himself as 秀色可餐. So hunkalicious means 秀色可餐的萬人迷.

At the pool side:

S: Don’t say that, no one is a know-it-all. I remember when I was in PTS I also taught a female classmate how to swim. She was like you, very scared of water in the beginning, she didn’t even know how to float.

KK: I know, she must be your girlfriend.

S: How do you know?

KK: Of course, look at the sweetness in your face, everyone would know you are talking about your GF.

S: Her name is Fiona, my classmate in PTS, she was a very nice girl, I planned to marry her, but she was killed by a robber.

Sometimes compromise is an art, which is about timing and destiny. Thus just like 30-year-old Sammul, people have to compromise. “Having been working for so many years, my personality has changed. In the past, I strictly stuck to my principles, but now I become more flexible. I’m not saying that I want to become slippery, I just get to know how to do the right thing at the right time, and understand compromise is necessary.” Due to not reconciling himself to constraints of signing management contract with TVB, Sammul hasn’t ever been fully promoted by TVB despite how talented he is and how much fate he has with the audience. Compared with his fellow TVB actors who have been playing leading roles, Sammul still performances as “half-lead” in EU, which has been kind of embarrassing and unfair.

TEN YEARS
The chances of seeing Sammul on TV have not been few, but not rather many either. Without signing a full management contract with TVB, Sammul receives the chance to shoot two or three series each year on average, some of them only broadcasted overseas. This year has been a luck year for him as EU is broadcasted in early this year, which is viewed as a good start for him. What Sammul has been up to at other time? Thanks to his motherland and the support from his fellow citizens there, Sammul can go back to perform in mainland China and star in TV series. “In fact, work has no regional differences to me. Now I have been doing promotion for EU, and meanwhile have been contemplating filming several mainland series. In May, I’m going to perform in a charity musical in Toronto Canada. What I can say is that I very enjoy filming series both in Hong Kong and in mainland China. Having been working as actor for so many years, I do have affection for TVB though. After working for a long time in mainland China, I just want to come back and see my colleges here.” “Having been working in entertainment industry for so many years, especially for these years going back to work in mainland China, I have broadened my vision. Seeing so many C/D-list actors own acting&film school background and have highly polished acting skills, I found myself even having no chance to enter acting training class since my company needed to reserve the degrees for Miss HK. What all I could do was learning-by-doing. I have nothing well compare to what they’ve got in this sense.”“But I view entertainment as people going back to home and turning out TV. If the audience likes to see me on TV, I have reached my goal. Of course, everyone enjoys seeing pretty girls or handsome guys. This is the basic requirement. Nowadays the audience even will judge what kind of person you are. In my opinion, at least in daily life, they probably will agree that Sammul Chan is not an unfavorable or malicious guy, but a pleasant person to see.

Honestly, there are barely totally malicious artists in the world. Besides “the basic requirement”, Sammul does have many other abilities that his fellow actors lack, which probably is the reason why he has been able to find his own place in TVB, and even could film The Vanishing Glaciers in Iceland with Mr.Chan, which was an enviable job.
“You said other people were jealous? That’s predictable. And even if people are not jealous, there probably will be some other people complaining about something else. I have asked Mr.Chan why he selected me. He told, “ I’ve got no idea. It wasn’t totally up to me, but the whole company. I cannot make decision for everything. Don’t you really think I’m of so much authority?” “But you should have known the final decision after group discussion. Why did you choose me?” “they just told you have a silver-tongue.”“Yet later, I asked the director again. And he told that there are many emergencies coming about in the glaciers, like ice collapsing suddenly or rollers turning over on the lake. Thus, they needed a methodical person who can organize appropriate speech immediately. “ Learning that Sammul persistently tried to figure out the real reason for his being selected and even raised question to Mr. Chan, I have no doubt about his excellent adaptability.
However, no world-shaking emergencies happened during the shooting, except that Mr. Chan hurt his waist on the iceberg while Sammul was standing too far away to help him out. I cannot help teasing him for losing this good opportunity to become Mr. Chan’s “favorite subordinate”. Otherwise, he should have been treated totally differently in TVB now.“Well, it doesn’t matter. If there would be such opportunity, my career path shouldn’t be so tough…”

Tough Path
How tough the path has been? Sammul is capable of renting house and living on his own, and of purchasing and wearing “Fendi” or “Hugo Boss”. Yet, happiness is all relative when Sammul is compared with his fellow actors: Raymond Lam is currently living at Mid-Levels ; Ron Ng always has usually played leads and drives Benz or Audi even being rumored by scandals all the time.
“Compared to my fellow male artists, I have a bit tougher career path. Say to buy an apartment, I’m not financially capable of doing that right now, but other people said they would buy big house, like Raymond Lam. I’m pretty poor. So now my biggest goal is to make money and blueprint the life after retirement. Haha. Of course, it’s impossible for me to retire right now. Sometimes I’ll still think about when I’m gonna reach my career peak though. I hope I can leave at the best time.
“I’m actually pretty satisfied with my present situation. Some people may think that it seems like I’ve stopped and don’t go forward, just in an embarrassing position, yet it actually depends on which market you would like to develop in. To be more honest, I indeed have earned money from filming series in mainland China these years. The pay for filming one single series in Mainland China is several-times better than in Hong Kong. “
“Where there is a loss, there must be a gain. I actually don’t really pursue and chase such things in some degree. Now I have the freedom I want, and one year later I also can go back to TVB filming two series. That’s not bad! And I’m conservative, of a personality fault. I have no thought to correct or change, you know future cannot be obtained by force. I know myself well and if I don’t do something now, I won’t do it later.”

Being weird
“You know, I’m really weird that I can do anything on my own, like going travel alone, going to movie alone, and even singing Karaoke alone. Okay. I’m afraid of getting into troubles, and don’t like to compete against people for things. But recently a sudden thought came to me about getting married and having kids.” Yes, you don’t get it wrong, Sammul said he wants to settle down.“Recently I have many friends getting married and having kids, which has brought me to this question. But I cannot really accept girls inside entertainment circle. So I think I probably will get married at or after age 35. Yet I rear cats in order to train my patience. I suppose if I cannot raise two cats well now, I won’t possibly be capable of raising and educating my kids in the future.”“I like to see everything under plan, and hope my kids can grow up in the best circumstances.” As a Christian, Sammul believes in that love is destined.

I'm usually not the type of audience who likes to bombard an actor/character with all the hurtful/criticizing comments. Yet watching LKK indeed has been a great challenge to my above-average patience and tolerance. I just cannot stand seeing her being stupid and overboard and have to say her character is toally painfully bad!

Absolutely it also has been one of the worst role I've ever had the displeasure of paying for.I know she is a newbie and has tried really hard to do her job.That's an understandement.Sadly,she tried so hard that I felt the veins in my forehead about to burst.This character just drags the whole show down! So LKK, please polish your acting skills and take some other better roles to play next time.

Yesterday Sammul Chan attended an event for Xbox 360's game "Need For Speed: Forza 2". He revealed that the other day he was at the Police station filming for a scene for "E.U" where Laughing Gor comes back to life. Originally he was part of the scene, but because his current hairstyle is different from in the series, the Producer only arranged for Laughing Gor to film the scene alone.

Sammul expressed that since the episode of "E.U" where he killed Laughing Gor, he was publicly scolded by many of Laughing Gor's fans. Many friends also called him and asked why he had to kill him. Sammul said helplessly: "Ask me to call Laughing Gor back, I can't help it either! He is a very successful role, Michael Tse acted it out very well." Will "E.U." film a "Laughing Gor Prequel" or a part 4? He said: "I heard that the Producer plans to film part 4, but that is something that will happen next year."

He expressed that because of the great feedback from "E.U.", his jobs has increased, this year his earnings has exceeded by 3 times last year. Asked how he will award himself? 1, Sammul is pronounced as “Samuel.” Actually, his original name, which was given by one of his sisters, was the latter. But when he was 11, he had to fill out an identity card form and misspelled his name, thus his name is written as Sammul since.

2, Besides Sammul and 陈键锋, his fans also call him 苗 (Cantonese: Miu / Mandarin: Miao), which means sprout, or a new young plant. Besides the word “Miu” has a quite similar pronunciation with the last syllable of his English name, “mul”, it also depicts his looks that are refreshing, young-looking, and healthy.

3, Sammul lived his first 19 years of life in a church with his parents and 2 older sisters where his father worked as a church worker. His family has been a Christian for 5 generations. He never joins TVB’s praying ceremony, which is an important event for the involved TVB artistes to attend, because it contradicts his Christian beliefs. He prays according to his beliefs instead, for the good ratings of his series.

4, Sammul doesn’t sign a management contract with TVB (AKA is not TVB’s own son as the media calls it), and is managed by Ivy Chow who has been his manager since he began to work in the entertainment world in 1999. Don't mean to diss him or anything but his grammar was moderately poor. LOL. What's up with him typing all ghetto and illiterately if his English is really that "perfect"? Hey, good pronounciation doesn't necessarily = good English, girls. Someone considered to have "perfect English" should be able to use proper grammar and spell in...well, English! *Don't whack me!* Just stating the facts. You know? Gillian Chung of Twins sounded accent free on her Children Songs CDs...but in reality...her English speech SUCKS! However, his English is way better compared to Ron's and other TVB actors.

I agree with you that although Sammul's English pronunciation is good enough for someone who didn't receive a Western exposure, his written English isn't that good. He wrote "to be continue" instead of to be continued when he posted The Four pics in his blog. I thought he was sleepy or what, forgot to type the "d", but he wrote "to be continue" again for the second time. I think he better take some writing English lessons with us, gorgeous ladies, by chatting with us here. What else could he ask for right ?

After reading Sammul's English blog entries,to be frank,I feel in the same way that his grammar isn't that good.maybe such ghetto typing is for speed,but i just get a bit frustrated when the whole paragraph is abbreviated.Don't mean to be picky or fussy but such typing just makes his grammatical mistakes more noticeable.I think Sammul's Enlgish is kinda half American/half British.he used words like "gonna, wanna" etc,which I think are pretty American coz as I know British people don't really use them,at least nor do my brititsh friends.He also spelt "program" as "programme",which I view a typical British word.

Yeah, I've had a couple of chances to hear him speak English in his series. In "Triumph in the Skies", he's a training pilot, and they were based in Adelaide (Australia) for a bit, so there were chances to hear him speak English to the Australians! There was a lot of discussion concerning the English skills of the actors on that show, because a lot of it was rather laughably bad! (and hence, quite unbelievable as pilots) One of the funniest posts I read though was someone who said "Is Sammul Chan's English skills so bad they had to dub him?", when in actual fact, it was Sammul's actual English that was so good the person thought it couldn't have been Sammul! I've also head him speak a little English on "On The First Beat" (EU prequel), as well as a documentary he hosted called "Ten Years". I think there's a youtube clip of his English speaking there, but I can't find it!

Funny thing is, after all that, I still can't really pick the accent! It probably leans more towards British though... hehehe...

I didn't know he spoke english in TITS...and it was so good that person didn't believe it was sammul himself speaking it...that was funny. I can't tell his accent either. Leans more towards British? Cos he studied in HK? But he sounds more american to me (but that only based on a few sentences).

Sammul also spoke a few English lines in "Maiden's Vow" in episode 20 something when he asked for a drink in the bar where Charmaine worked in the fourth generation story. I rewound the scenes for more than 10 times I think, coz I really love his speaking English, so captivating !

In the love confession scene in Epi15,I remember Sammul said to Kakei, "although Ah Man isn't here right now, I still feel very happy having you by my side."(if I didn't get it wrong.)This sounds like Ah Man is the one who Sammul really cares, and because of Ah Man's absence,Sammul could finally get together with KK.I got the feeling that Sammul treated KK as Ah Man substitute.

Later even Ah Man told Sammul they were not bros any more,but they still hanged out together in some secluded place without reconciling with each other officially.

Yeah, I was all giddy when I heard him mention Lap Man not being there with him. It sounded like an ex missing his lover. I hated the fact that she interrupted him and changed the topic to her BORING life about electronics and cleaning!!! LOL. I wanted more Lap Man recognition from Sammul's lovely mouth. I totally think that Sammul was trying to take their "brotherhood" to the NEXT level in this installment. I could see all his love and care in Lap Man from Ep1-onwards...

In fact, I think the poor guy was probably the most misunderstood character in the whole show!

1. He fights against his girlfriend's family - I actually though it took real guts and professionalism for him to do that, and proved that he was a very capable lawyer who wasn't affected by his emotions when doing his job. The girlfriend's family didn't even really have a case, and if Vincent gave up this opportunity to help Lily's Dad, it would've been dumb and unprofessional (as he already agreed before he knew it was Ah Yuk's family). However, everyone then criticised him for not putting his girlfriend first.

2. He lies in court concerning the contract - Okay, first off, poor guy was a victim of the whole shebang. He wrote up a very decent contract, and only found out later that Noel changed it! He had no intention of cheating the house owners. Then he agrees to testify, because he believes it's the right thing to do, only to find out that if he doesn't, his girlfriend fulfills her dream of having her own cake store. This time, he put his girlfriend first, and he's criticised for being unprofessional. >.<

So if he fulfills his job as a lawyer, he's stone hearted, and if he decides to put family first, he's unprofessional... And lastly, I can't believe MK gave him up in court and pretty much ruined his entire career for the rest of his life! That's just mean! Vincent was under a lot of pressure at the time, maybe he wasn't thinking straight, but I'm sure MK could've found a better way to solve it. Drag the trail on for an appeal perhaps, and then tell them to not use Vincent personally. And I bet if Vincent did the same thing to MK, he would be criticised for doing something so bad to his friend!

Anyhows, ranting aside, it was an okay series, Sammul was a darling as usual! hehehe... And one part I did notice was when he was in court giving testimony, and they asked him if he was religious, and his eyes start darting side to side (an obvious sign that someone is lying/ uncomfortable giving an answer) as he says "no" (because Vincent wasn't, even if Sammul is).

In this trip of mine to Shang Hai, besides filming a meaningful TV program called 36'7, I also did some magazine interviews, met some old friends, make some new friends, and had some delicious food. I didn't even have to bother my fans to pick me up and bid me farewell in the airport, as I could walk around in there, making all of us happy.

The TV program that I filmed, not only that it provides a healthy lifestyle, it also makes me satisfied in filming. I also have to thank Ding Meng, Yan Kuan, and Wang Guan for being there, they added color to the show. Because the show was about health, I met with Doctor Zhu who prescribed me some Chinese medicine, also under Teacher Wang's arrangement, I had Mr. Xu massaging me, which was amazing. If I still have the opportunity, I'll certainly come again and get medicated, because I believe that even my old and nagging pains are able to be uprooted.

When I was in Shang Hai, the weather was very nice, and I heard that it was raining when I went home. Oops, I guess it was my fault taking the sunshine away. Don't rush, don't rush, life is full of rain and sunshine, isn't it? Hehe..

When I was young, my father always taught me that we have to plans, so I always readjust my plans once every 5 years, and control my goals, so I can make progress steadily. Although cannot be called successful, still at least I have made some progess.

I've just finished an interview with a teen magazine, Smarteen, and one of the questions was how to keep one's emotion positive when one is frustrated. The fact is when someone's feeling down and discouraged, keeping an optimistic and cheerful feeling ain't an easy job. But everybody believes that when the rain stops, the sun will come out again, after one's really down at the bottom, he will rebound. I bet Sammultoy will agree with this point of view of mine.

One thinks that by having faith and perseverance there will be a way out. Young people must recognize their own goals, stick to their principles, don't be pessimistic and don't avoid, don't you think you so?

I've made a new goal recently. In my free time, I will dedicate my time to the society, especially sharing my life's journey to the young people. Doesn't this include a youth ambassador's job?

Next week, E.U. will be airing its final episodes. I recalled when I first filmed The Academy five years ago, from training in the cadet school to graduation, then to On The First Beat, and this year E.U., when I looked back, I was in fact growing up with my character in the series, to be honest I quite miss it!

After filming Tiger Wong last year, I took leave to take on some learning, also to take a break, then to start filming a mainland series, however the sudden global economic crisis had my plans disrupted, in the end because of the delay in filming, I don’t want to be wishing to do everything yet doing a sloppy job for everything, therefore I was forced to give up on other jobs and just concentrate on the musical drama, to raise funds for World Vision, so that more needy children will be benefited.

Some fans told me that they were disappointed because they can’t go to Canada to buy tickets to support me, but to me if you can make donations to support World Vision’s children sponsorship program, so that more children can benefit, that is supporting my performance. There may be some youths who do have the financial abilities to sponsor the children, then just donate whatever you can, do it within your means, small sums add up!
